Carmen Schabracq
Carmen Schabracq was born in 1988 in Amsterdam (the Netherlands), where she lives and works.
She is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, ceramics, costume, performance, installation, and textiles. Her work explores identity through masks, drawing from folklore, art history, and feminist perspectives. Vivid colour, tactility, and a sense of playfulness are among the distinctive qualities of her practice. Themes of motherhood, birth, and intergenerational narratives feature prominently in her recent work.
Carmen Schabracq studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp (Belgium), and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome (Italy). She has held residencies in Mexico, Bulgaria, Italy, and the Netherlands. In 2024, she designed masks and costumes for “The Gospel According to the Other Mary” at the Vienna Volksoper theatre (Austria). Her work is part of major collections, including the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and AkzoNobel Art Foundation in Amsterdam. She exhibits with Galerie Fleur & Wouter in Amsterdam and has shown in institutions such as the Amsterdam Museum and Stedelijk Museum Breda (the Netherlands).
